Olivier Mosset (1944-)
Olivier Mosset est l’une des figures centrales de la peinture abstraite d’après - guerre et une référence incontournable pour plusieurs générations de peintres européens et américains. D’abord associé à Daniel Buren, Michel Parmentier et Niele Toroni, au sein de l’éphémère constellation B.M.P.T., la série de cercles qu’il peint inlassablement pendant les années 1960 compte parmi les œuvres les plus fréquemment commentées de cette époque.
Dans un climat parisien pré-mai 68, les quatre peintres organisent alors des
« manifestations » plutôt que des expositions et s’opposent à la tradition européenne de la peinture cultivée, qu’elle soit figurative ou abstraite.Comme a pu l’écrire le critique Bob Nickas : « Olivier Mosset a toujours été sérieusement engagé dans l’abstraction et son histoire, avec une façon d’appréhender la peinture en termes de production et de réception, et avec une conscience de sa dimension sociale et politique. »
Installé aux Etats-Unis depuis 1977, Mosset prend part à la vibrante scène artistique new-yorkaise des années 1980. Avec la même rigueur analytique qui caractérise ses premiers travaux, sa peinture explore alors les champs du monochrome ou de l’abstraction géométrique. Rétrospectivement, Mosset apparaît comme l’un des seuls peintres européens à se situer dans l’héritage de la grande peinture américaine (celle des Frank Stella, Robert Ryman ou Barnet Newman). Cela ne l’empêchera pas de rester attentif aux développements des scènes qu’il traverse et de soutenir des pratiques d’artistes différentes de la sienne.
Suite au projet qu’il met en place en 2018 au MAMO à Marseille, pour lequel il developpe une peinture «caméléon» Olivier Mosset réalise durant l’été 2022 deux oeuvres sur aluminium pour la Galerie Pauline Pavec, des monochromes iridescents pensés pour un dilaogue indédit avec les paillettes de Robert Malaval.

Olivier Mosset is one of the central figures of post-war abstract painting, and a key reference point for several generations of European and American painters. Initially associated with Daniel Buren, Michel Parmentier and Niele Toroni as part of the short-lived B.M.P.T. constellation, the series of circles he painted tirelessly during the 1960s are among the most frequently commented on works from that period.
In the pre-May '68 Parisian climate, the four painters were organising 'demonstrations' rather than exhibitions.
As the critic Bob Nickas wrote: "Olivier Mosset has always been seriously committed to abstraction and its history, with a way of seeing painting in terms of production and reception, and with an awareness of its social and political dimension ».
Mosset has lived in the United States since 1977, and took part in the vibrant New York art scene of the 1980s. With the same analytical rigour that characterised his early work, his painting explored the fields of monochrome and geometric abstraction. In retrospect, Mosset appears to be one of the few European painters to have followed in the footsteps of the great American painters (Frank Stella, Robert Ryman and Barnet Newman). However, this did not prevent him from remaining attentive to developments in the scenes through which he passed, and from supporting artists' practices that differed from his own.
Following the project he set up in 2018 at the MAMO in Marseille, for which he developed a "chameleon" style of painting, Olivier Mosset produced two works on aluminium for the Galerie Pauline Pavec during the summer of 2022, iridescent monochromes designed to create an unprecedented dilaogue with the « glitters » of Robert Malaval.
